Invitation to everyone,
On May 28th 9:00 a.m. at Queen's Park in the press conference room, MPP Lise Vaugeois will be announcing Andre's Residents'e Bill of Rights for Persons Living with Disabilities.
Currently, disabled persons living in government established care facilities, similar to Long Term Care homes, do not have a Residents' Bill of Rights.
Maria Sardelis, through her advocacy work with Access to Seniors and Disabled, has become aware of numerous cases involving statutory violations and infringements of the Charter rights of persons with disabilities living in government-established care agencies.
Andre's Residents’ Bill of Rights was developed to affirm that persons with disabilities are entitled to the same legal protections, dignity, autonomy, and freedoms as every other member of society.
Disregarding the autonomy of disabled persons — and ignoring the legal statutes designed to protect them — represents a serious overreach of power and a breach of the relationship of trust that exists between vulnerable residents and the agencies entrusted with their care.
Persons living with disabilities cannot speak out for themselves. Society therefore has a responsibility to speak out against the exploitation of disability, and ensure that vulnerable individuals are treated with dignity, respect, and equality.
A Residents’ Bill of Rights is a safeguard against exclusion, unlawful restriction, and the erosion of fundamental human rights.
You must RSVP to be able to attend.
We urge all supporters to reach out to their Liberal and Conservative MPPs and ask that they support a bill which will provide disabled persons with the same Residents' Bill of Rights enjoyed by seniors living in care homes and receiving the same medical and daily living support as disabled persons.
